MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY ARE HEALTHCARE VOTERS! WILL YOU BE A HEALTHCARE VOTER TOO? WE ASK THAT YOU SUPPORT

BDH is calling on community support of legislative efforts that will enhance the quality of life for individuals with bleeding disorders. We urge you to support and raise awareness for legislation in Iowa and nationwide that improves access to healthcare, affordable treatments, and overall patient well-being. By raising your voice and voting for what you believe in, you can help drive meaningful policy changes that ensure better healthcare outcomes for those affected by bleeding disorders.

MEDICARE/MEDICAL ISSUES
The recent Medicaid redetermination process has left almost 200,000 Iowans without healthcare, mostly due to clerical deficiencies. Have accountability for the shortcomings, which lead to healthcare gaps for your constituent’s. There continues to be a significant coverage gap
between Medicaid eligibility and ACA eligibility and affordability. Vote for policies that assure healthcare accessibility for all Iowans!

INSURANCE ACCESSIBILITY AND FORMULARY ISSUES
In 2024, people with bleeding disorders are continuing to face challenges with formulary exclusions. They are being denied the medications chosen by their physician to best treat their disorder and facing gaps in treatment. They are met with ongoing appeals and peer to peer reviews that are inconsistent across the board. During this time, they have to rely on medications that are less effective or have no medication at all. There are no generic substitutes for the medications used to treat bleeding disorders.

Together, we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by healthcare challenges. By joining forces, we can advocate for policies that ensure everyone has access to the medications and treatments they need. Your commitment to being a healthcare voter can help drive change and bring about a healthier future for all. Thank you for considering the importance
of these issues and for your willingness to stand with us in this vital cause. Let’s work together to ensure that every Iowan has the healthcare access they deserve.

As specific BILLS are introduced, we will add them here for you to be made aware and links will be provided for explanations and understanding.

Bills to keep an eye out for are Copay accumulators and PBM Reform.

Good news the co-pay accumulator language was introduced last week as part of the PBM Reform legislation in the House and the Senate late last week. In Section 4 of House Study Bill 99 (HSB 99) and Senate Study Bill 1074 (SSB 1074) you will find the language which requires insurance companies to apply the full benefit of any prescription drug purchase toward the patients deductible. It also includes other cost sharing and reimbursement language ensuring the patient is not punished in the process, if interested see page 3, line 35 – page 4, line 25 of the bills.

Click HERE to check out the exciting news from the hearings on the bills we’re supporting! This report, dated February 5, 2025, highlights the testimony shared. The hearings took place during our 2025 Advocacy Day at the Capitol.

We’re also thrilled to share that the Governor issued a proclamation declaring March as Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month—an incredible honor for our community!
