Apply for a BDH Scholarship
Be a current member of Bleeding Disorders of the Heartland (BDH) for the year 2024/2025. Your membership must be submitted before scholarship applications are due.
- Must reside in the BDH service area (State of Iowa or if outside the State of Iowa, must seek care at the UIHC Treatment Center) unless prior arrangements are made.
- Must have a diagnosed bleeding disorder or be an immediate family member (sibling, child, or caregiver) of someone that has a diagnosed bleeding disorder (diagnosed bleeding disorder is defined as a person who is being followed with a treatment plan).
- Verification of diagnosis may be required from your physician upon request (you will be notified if this is required).
- High school graduate before or in 2024/2025.
- Be enrolled in a degree seeking program at an accredited college, university, or trade school in the United States during the 2025-2026 academic year for a minimum of 6 credit hours.
- You must be present at the Scholarship Award Ceremony at the BDH Annual Meeting March 15, 2025, in order to receive any scholarship awarded.
- Active participation in Bleeding Disorders of the Heartland will play a role in determining scholarships.
General Scholarship
$500 for non-affected person and $1,000 for an affected person.
Scholarship Requirement

Community service within the BDH bleeding disorder community. (i.e., Attending an event, participating in the walk, advocacy for the bleeding disorder community, volunteering at an event)

Completion of scholarship application including a minimum of 500-word essay

A typed 500-word (minimum) essay that includes each of the following:

Explain your short-range goals and long-range career plans.

Personal background in relation to the bleeding disorder community.

Contribution to the bleeding disorders community.

Memorial Scholarships: David N. Brustkern, John Hiesner and Dude Cramer Scholarships
$1,000 for non-affected person and $1,500 for affected person.
Scholarship Requirement
- The General Scholarship Essay
- A letter of recommendation from a non-family member.
- All other criteria from above (see General Scholarship)
- A letter of recommendation from a BDH board member, member of the Executive Committee, a Committee Chairperson, or someone from the HTC verifying contributions made to BDH and/or support of our mission.
- A typed paragraph of how BDH has impacted your life.
